The Northwest Africa (NWA) 5790 meteorite: A mesostasis-rich nakhlite with little or no Martian aqueous alteration

چکیده
Northwest Africa (NWA) 5790 is the most recently discovered member of the nakhlite group. Its mineralogy differs from the other nakhlites with a high abundance mesostasis (38.1 3.6 vol%) and scarcity of olivine (4.0 2.2 vol%). Furthermore, zoning of augite phenocrysts, and other petrographic and chemical characteristics suggest that NWA 5790 samples the chilled margin of its parent lava flow/sill. NWA 5790 contains calcite and rare clay minerals that are evidence for its exposure to liquid water. The calcite forms a cement to coatings of dust on the outer surface of the find and extends into the interior of the meteorite within veins. The presence of microbial remains within the coating confirms that the dust and its carbonate cement are terrestrial in origin, consistent with the carbon and oxygen isotope composition of the calcite. The clay minerals are finely crystalline and comprise ~0.003 vol% of the meteorite. dD values of the clay minerals range from 212 109& to 96 132&, and cannot be used to distinguish between a terrestrial or Martian origin. As petrographic results are also not definitive, we conclude that secondary minerals produced by Martian groundwaters are at best very rare within NWA 5790. The meteorite has therefore sampled a region of the lava flow/sill with little or no exposure to the aqueous solutions that altered other nakhlites. This isolation could relate to the scarcity of olivine in NWA 5790 because dissolution of olivine in other nakhlites by Martian groundwaters enhanced their porosity and permeability, and provided solutes for secondary minerals.

متن کاملUnique meteorite from early Amazonian Mars: water-rich basaltic breccia Northwest Africa 7034.
We report data on the martian meteorite Northwest Africa (NWA) 7034, which shares some petrologic and geochemical characteristics with known martian meteorites of the SNC (i.e., shergottite, nakhlite, and chassignite) group, but also has some unique characteristics that would exclude it from that group. NWA 7034 is a geochemically enriched crustal rock compositionally similar to basalts and ave...

MIL 03346 is a newly discovered meteorite from Miller Range in Antarctica, which belongs to the nakhlite group of Martian meteorites [1]. It is an unbrecciated, mediumgrained olivinebearing clinopyroxenite with a cumulate texture, similar to the 6 other previously known nakhlites. This is only the 2 nakhlite in Antarctic collections, the other being Yamato 000593 and its pairs. The Meteorite Wo...
متن کاملEvidence for a widespread basaltic breccia component in the martian low-albedo regions from the reflectance spectrum of Northwest Africa 7034
Northwest Africa (NWA) 7034 is the first breccia meteorite from Mars, and unlike the shergottite, nakhlite, and chassignite (SNC) martian meteorites, it matches the estimated chemical composition of martian crust. Here we show that the visible-infrared reflectance spectrum of NWA 7034 is unique compared to other SNCs and is more similar than them to remotely sensed data from Mars, suggesting th...

Introduction: Knowledge of martian igneous and mantle composition is crucial for understanding mantle evolution including early differentiation, mantle convection and the chemical alteration of the surface. Primitive magmas provide critical information on their mantle source regions but most Martian meteorites crystallized from fractionated melts [1]. The new martian meteorite NWA 5789, discove...
